Step-by-step guide

For those who struggle to find a good Korean e-dictionary for whatever reason, try this.

1. Download one of e-dictionary files from https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Pb71pN1_8Xyzm1mAeTyfG0R8DWOyWn26

갈망님 사전 - Google Drive

drive.google.com

Note: the file owner gathers several dictionaries together. Note that:

K (Eng-Kor detailed dictionary)

Q: Eng-Kor quick version

M: Macmillan dictionary

O: Oxford dictionary

C: Collins Cobuild dictionary

AD: idioms

L: Longman dictionary

Amongst folders in the google drive,

갈망님 사전 2.0 refers to 2.0 ver. 3-4 dictionaries together. The owner recommends this for all Kindle devices

갈망님 사전 2.1 refers to 2.1 ver. 7 dictionaries altogether. This could make your Kindle device slow. Recommended for Kindle devices that are paperwhite or later versions.

안드로이드 아이폰용 갈망님 사전: dictionaries for Android and iPhone Kindle apps

If you want to see Eng-Kor first, get a file starting with Q, K

If you want to have Eng-Eng explanation first and then Eng-Kor, get a file starting with C, L, M, or O

2. Add the dictionary to your device

This section I can only talk from my own experiences with Macbook Pro (2020), iPhone 12, and Kindle Paperwhite (2022):

  • Kindle: connect your Kindle device to your laptop, and add the file to Finder/Kindle/Documents/Dictionaries. Open a random book, select a word, and go to Dictionary. On the bottom-right corner, click on whatever dictionary you have there to open the "Select New Dictionary" pop-up and the file you added should show up there. In my case, I didn't have to restart the device or anything and it worked out smoothly.
  • iPhone/iPad: connect your device to your laptop. Once the iPhone shows up, go to files and click the Kindle app icon. Drag and drop the prc file there:

You can use the dictionary the same way, by going to a random book, clicking a random word, going to Dictionary, yet clicking the left bottom corner of whatever your current dictionary is. Your new dictionary should pop up on the list of your dictionaries. For some reason, it took me 2-3 days to be able to find the added dictionary. You may wait or restart your device.

Have fun reading!
